What size should wall art be above a sofa?
As a rule of thumb, art above a sofa should span two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa’s width. Above a 210 cm sofa that means roughly 140–160 cm of art — either one large piece or a series of two or three hung as a group.
How high should I hang wall art?
Hang art so its centre sits at eye level, about 145–152 cm above the floor. Above furniture, let the bottom edge sit 15–25 cm above the furniture so the two read as one visual unit.
How much space should there be between a sofa and the picture?
Leave 15–25 cm between the top of the sofa (or headboard or sideboard) and the bottom edge of the frame. Much more than that and the artwork visually floats away from the furniture.
Should I choose one large piece or a set of two or three?
One large piece reads calm and gallery-like; a pair or triptych adds rhythm. Keep 5–8 cm between the pieces and treat the whole group as a single artwork when you centre it — the two-thirds rule applies to the total width.
What if my ceiling is very low or very high?
With low ceilings, favour landscape formats and keep the top edge at least 15 cm below the ceiling. With high ceilings, resist the urge to hang higher — keep the centre at eye level and scale the artwork up instead.
